The Ministry of Petroleumand Methanex Egypt Sign a New Memorandum of Understanding to Support the Implementation of Process Safety Management in the Sector

Cairo, February 19, 2025 – Methanex Egypt signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to continue the strong partnership started in 2018 to build a solid base for Process Safety Management (PSM) within Egypt’s oil, gas and Petrochemical sector. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of H.E. Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources on the sidelines of EGYPES 2025 and was attended by Eng. Alaa El Batal, Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources First Undersecretary and Supervisor, HSE, Energy Efficiency and Climate, and Mohamed Shindy, Methanex Egypt Managing Director.
The new Memorandum of Understanding reinforces Methanex Egypt’s dedication towards promoting the integration of PSM within the oil, gas, and petrochemical sector and takes the company’s commitment further – from enabling the development and issuance of the industry’s 24 PSM standards and guidelines as part of the initial PSM MoU signed between the two parties in 2020 to the implementation of the Process Safety program.
Reflecting on the new MoU signing, Mohamed Shindy said: “We embarked on this journey to work with our partners on embedding PSM with the Egyptian oil, gas and petrochemical sector in 2018 and I’m proud of the milestones achieved through our collaboration with the ministry and sector. The new MoU brings us a step closer to our primary goal of saving lives through the adoption and application of PSM international best practices, guidelines and standards.”
This new MoU builds upon the MoU signed in 2020 between Methanex Egypt and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, which led to the creation of a comprehensive three-year PSM roadmap, the establishment of the PSM Egyptian Steering Committee and Technical Sub-Committee and the development of 24 PSM standards and guidelines to enable the safe design, construction and operation of facilities working in the Egyptian oil, gas, and petrochemical sector.
