Petroleum minister witnesses ABB agreements to improve energy efficiency at Abu Qir Fertilizers
Egypt’s Petroleum Minister Eng. Karim Badawi attended the signing of two new agreements by ABB Egypt, a leader in technology and energy solutions. The agreements are aimed at improving energy efficiency and promoting sustainability in Egypt’s industrial sector.
The first agreement was signed by Ahmed El-Sherbini, Vice President of ABB Egypt Cluster for Energy Industries and Eng. Abed Ezz El Regal, Chairman and Managing Director of Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemicals Industries Company (AFC).
The deal focuses on installing an advanced automation control system at Abu Qir Ammonia Plant (1), which will optimize the steam utilization leading to reduce natural gas consumption for steam boilers by 2% to 4% in the first phase. The agreement also aims to improve operational efficiency at the plant.
Ahmed El-Sherbini emphasized the importance of this project, saying: “we “ABB” are committed to providing advanced solutions that support efficiency and sustainability across various industrial sectors.”
“This project represents a pivotal step toward enhancing sustainability and maximizing the use of energy resources at Abu Qir Fertilizers,” he added.
Looking ahead, the project includes a future-focused plan to expand the implementation of the automation control system to Abu Qir Plants (2) and (3). This expansion will enhance operational performance and lead to further energy savings. Such initiatives align with ABB’s ongoing commitment to support Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainability, ensuring long-term growth and environmental responsibility in the country’s industrial sector.
Furthermore, a second agreement was signed between El-Sherbini and Bjorn Q. Aaserod, CEO of the U.S. company MPS, in the presence of Eng. Ibrahim Meki, chairman of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM), and Eng. Moataz Atef, Undersecretary of the Ministry for the Affairs of the Minister’s Office, Technical Office, and official spokesperson.
The agreement outlines ABB’s role in providing cutting-edge technical solutions, including electrical systems, automation control, and digital technologies, for the green hydrogen project, which will partially replace natural gas in production processes, significantly reducing both natural gas consumption and carbon emissions.
During the signing ceremony, Al-Sherbini, said: “At ABB, we are deeply committed to playing a pivotal role in advancing Egypt’s transition to sustainable energy. We strive to deliver cutting-edge solutions that drive exceptional operational efficiency across diverse industries, ensuring a future of enhanced sustainability and innovation.”
